Michael
Khoury was born in Northern Lebanon in 1950. Michael was nine
when his family immigrated to Fredericton. From an early age,
he displayed a keen interest in painting and drawing. He graduated
in 1975 from the University of New Brunswick, where he studied
art history and did studio work. During the 1980's he also
developed an interest in photography, winning several awards.
In 1992, Michael
developed a close friendship with Molly Lamb Bobak and
her husband Bruno - both painters
and amongst the renowned war artists who went over seas during
World War II to record the Canadian troops in action. For
the next three years, under their encouragement and instruction,
he began to paint extensively and has continued to produce
a large body of work. Molly Lamb Bobak writes of him: "Every
student begins with a mentor and shows influences of artists
he admires; Michael now has reached a point of individual
expression".
Michael’s brightly
colored paintings mostly depict still life, romanticized
Canadian landscapes
and portraits of beautifully dressed sensuous women. Michael's
sense of light and composition, however, undeniably reflect
his Middle Eastern roots.
Michael Khoury views
his art as an endless voyage of exploration. Since 1995,
his work has been shown
in solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada.
