George Antanov

George Antonov graduated from Bulgaria’s Nicolai Pavloviche Fine Arts Academy of Sofia with a Masters of Fine Arts in 1975.
After graduation, he worked as an arts editor while developing his career as a sculptor, carrying out commissions for various state government buildings, completing works in mosaics, fresco and free-standing sculpture.

He became a professor of Fine Arts at the Ilia Petrov College of Fine Arts in  Sofia in 1984, and participated in several national group exhibitions throughout his tenure.

He has also exhibited in several prestigious international group exhibitions over the years; in Barcelona, Moscow, Monastica, Havana, Prague and his work is in the permanent collections of the museums of Tolbuxin and Turnova, Bulgaria.

In the early ‘90s, Antonov immigrated to Canada with his family, and quickly became an active member of the artistic community in Bowmanville, Ontario.

His Canadian commissions include the Whitby General Hospital “Tree of Life” bronze sculpture, the Trafalgar Castle College Donor Recognition Award sculpture, the Durham Business Centre Student Recogintion Wall Sculpture, all in Ontario, Canada.

Since immigrating, he has concentrated mainly on painting. His work is expressive in style, influenced by modern masters such as Picasso and Matisse. His compositions depict figurative images abstracted and personalized by the use of a vivid palette of bright colors. His drawing style eliminates all inessentials and focuses on achieving a powerful emotional presence.
